Walk Cap de Creus

Spain's wildest coastline — volcanic rock, hidden coves, and ancient trails starting from Casa23's doorstep.

Cap de Creus is one of the most dramatic landscapes in southern Europe — a protected national park of twisted volcanic rock, fragrant scrubland, and dazzling sea views. The trails are raw, spectacular, and largely uncrowded. Most routes start within walking distance of Casa23.

Cap de Creus National Park

Spain's easternmost point is a place of genuine wildness. The park covers 10,000 hectares of rocky headland, where the Pyrenees meet the Mediterranean. Dalí lived here, in Portlligat, and the landscape shaped his surrealist vision — you'll understand why the moment you walk it.

The coastline is dramatic: sheer cliffs, sea stacks, rock arches, and hidden coves only accessible on foot. The light is extraordinary, especially in the golden hours. Wildlife includes Bonelli's eagles, dolphins in the bay, and wild boar in the scrubland.

Key Trails

  • Roses to Cap de Creus Lighthouse (14km one way): The classic long walk. Coastal path along the cap, past the cala beaches, to the lighthouse at the tip. Return by taxi or arrange a pickup.
  • Cap de Creus Circuit (18km loop): A full-day circular taking in the lighthouse, Portlligat (Dalí's house), and Cadaqués for lunch. Challenging but unforgettable.
  • Cala Jóncols Loop (8km): A moderate half-day walk down to one of the most beautiful hidden coves on the cap. Swimming stops essential.
  • Roses Town to Puig Culip (10km): A popular trail from town up to the headland with panoramic views over the entire Bay of Roses and the Pyrenees beyond.
  • Cadaqués to Portlligat (3km easy): A gentle coastal walk linking Cadaqués to Dalí's house and studio. Short but beautiful — great for a relaxed morning.

Seasons for Hiking

The Cap de Creus trails are at their best in spring and autumn. Summer is perfectly walkable with early starts — the mornings are cool and the light is magical before 10am. Winter walking is underrated: mild temperatures, no crowds, and the pine forests are at their greenest.

  • Spring (March–May): Wildflowers, warm days, ideal temperatures. Peak season for hikers.
  • Summer (June–Aug): Hot by midday — start early. Evenings on the trails are beautiful.
  • Autumn (Sept–Nov): Excellent. The summer crowds have gone. September is particularly lovely.
  • Winter (Dec–Feb): Crisp, clear days and completely crowd-free. Pack a windproof for the cap.
